Blisters are a kind of yucky and they are definitely not fun. A blister forms because the outer layer of the skin has been damaged. Fluid gathers under the damaged layer of skin.
Friction, like when a new pair of shoes rubs, can cause your feet to blister, and the most common type of blister is a foot blister. Chemicals can cause the skin to blister, like putting your hands in turpentine or cement. Your skin will blister from scalding or burning. There are some medical conditions that cause blisters. If you are unable to determine the cause easily, see your doctor for diagnosis.
Why Does Your Body Blister, Anyway?
Your body forms a blister to cushion and protect the underlying tissue from harm. Unless the blister is quite painful, or prevents you from walking or using your hands, it is best not to interfere with this natural healing process. Keeping the skin over a blister intact helps to provide a natural barrier against bacteria and reduces the risk of infection.
What's the stuff inside a blister?
Most blisters are filled with a clear fluid called serum. If the skin is crushed, pinched or tightly squeezed, it may form a blister filled with blood (known as a blood blister or a red blister). If your blister arose from a burn, please learn more about taking care of burns.
How Can Infinitealoe® Skin Care Help When You Have A Blister?
A scientific review for the Department of Defense discussed the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory qualities of Aloe Vera against a wide variety of ailments, from burns and frostbite injuries to arthritis.
The organic Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis Miller) that is the primary ingredient of InfiniteAloe® Skin Care, nourishes your skin with saponins, which are particularly helpful in pain relief. There are many reports that saponins elevate the body's production of cortisone, which can reduce the soreness and puffiness of blisters.
InfiniteAloe® contains collagen, the main structural protein making up 70% of the body's connective tissue. Some European studies have shown collagen helps speed recovery from injuries and provide structure to recovering skin.
Vitamin A may also be important for rapid healing, as it is vital to the repair and growth of epithelial cells of the skin. Grape Seed Oil brings powerful cellular rebuilding properties deep below the skin's surface to moisturize and aid in protecting skin tissue. These are just some of the many beneficial, organic ingredients in InfiniteAloe®. A full list may be found here.
Simple Blister Treatment (when the blister is closed and swollen)
- Cleanse the area of the blister very gently (don't open the blister). If needed, apply cool, wet compresses, or immerse in cool, fresh water to reduce pain and swelling.
- Apply InfiniteAloe® Skin Care to the blister and the area around it.
- Cover a small blister with a regular adhesive bandage (Band-aid). Use a porous, non-stick gauze pad to cover a large blister.
Should you Drain a Blister?
Do not drain a blister unless it is excessively painful or interferes with your quality of life. To ease blister-related pain, drain the fluid but keep the skin intact as unbroken as possible-never pick at or poke blisters, you could cause an infection.
- Cleanse the area of the blister very gently. If needed, apply cool, wet compresses, or immerse in cool, fresh water to reduce pain and swelling.
- Bathe the blister with iodine or rubbing alcohol.
- Sterilize a clean, sharp needle with rubbing alcohol.
- Use the needle to pierce near the blister's edge. Let the fluid drain, but leave the overlaying skin in place.
- Apply antibiotic ointment and cover with a bandage or gauze pad.
- When the blister seems to be scabbing over, apply InfiniteAloe® Skin care to it and the surrounding skin.
- Keep the blister moist and protected with a bandage or gauze pad until it's gone.
These recommendations do not apply to infected blisters (red, hot, increasingly sore, pus-filled), or to people with diabetes or poor circulation, or any underlying medical condition that causes blisters. In those cases, please see your doctor.
How Can You Prevent Blisters?
Bad shoes, sunburn and kitchen burns are major culprits behind blisters.
Properly fitting shoes and adding moleskin to the inside of your shoes where they may rub (such as the Achilles tendon) can prevent painful blisters. If you are a runner or very active, you may want to try special athletic socks that have extra padding where you need it most. Other protective clothing may be advisable-gardening or riding gloves, for example, depending on your activities.
Cover up or wear sunscreen, even on overcast days, if you are going to be outdoors.
In the kitchen keep things very tidy while you are cooking to prevent accidents.
